Navigating Opportunities and Risks in Hyperconnected Schools

Rapid advances in communication technologies continue to present a multitude of risks, as well as opportunities for school district leaders. Telecommunciations convergence and the advent of web 2.0 technologies present challenges related to cyberbullying and irresponsible uses of social networking websites by students and staff. Open source software projects and open content initiatives (WikiBooks, MIT Open Courseware) offer robust functionality and curriculum options for learners that were not available even ten years ago. Exploring how school district leaders can proactively respond to these risks as well as opportunities to responsibly address liability concerns, meet obligations for fiscal responsibility and support a learning environment that cultivates ethical and responsible digital citizenship in the twenty-first century.
