JennG: Glas to be here

DR from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 14 minutes ago

JennG: Glad, but need more coffee

Super Teacher: I have never Googled myself...

Claire Hertz: I brought a BIG cup

Claire Hertz: I set up a google alert for my name as well

Super Teacher: How do you set up a google alert?

badiettrich from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 9 minutes ago

Jason from x.x.x.97 joined the chat 9 minutes ago

readerdiane: Olympus WS110 voice recorder $58

Super Teacher: They would get lost, broken, stolen...

Claire Hertz: www.google.com/alerts

Claire Hertz: go to the site, enter whatever you want to be alerted on, and it will show up in your e-mail

Claire Hertz: it helps me keep track of when I get quoted in the Oregonian in my job at Beaverton

JennG: Love the LENS idea

readerdiane: If the kids value what they are doing then they will be careful.

Lori: Testing to see if I am still here

darek: there you are ---->

Wesley from x.x.x.52 joined the chat

Wesley: OK, let's respond now with what we thought

Claire Hertz: you're sitting right next to me Lori...I think you're still here - pretty in green!

clschultz: I think that this would be amazing to watch 50 years from now.

bob: voice in the story

readerdiane: She has a very strong voice

Claire Hertz: The emotion came through her voice made the video

Claire Hertz: would not have heard the emotion on paper

Lori: A great chance to share for students that are overwhelmed when they think of having to write - plus knowing it will be recorded they will take more time and effort

darek: I'd like to do a video fro my kids to watch while they are with the sub tomorrow.

Super Teacher: Any time you give the kids a chance to talk they love it. I like the idea af them "chatting" about things on line but still being in class.

Pia Alliende from x.x.x.131 joined the chat

Pia Alliende from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 6 seconds ago

Claire Hertz: good morning Pia

dgrice: Personal Stories add emotion as well as information. Communcates so much more and more memorable. Examples: http://thestory.org/

Pia Alliende: hello

darek: I find the chatting ditracting myself... it's hard to listen to the speaker.... imo

readerdiane: How far we have to go...

Claire Hertz: i enjoy multitasking - keeps me engaged

bob: growing up in the 50s in s. california i never saw this

Super Teacher: I would have to be in the same chat room with my kids so I could look at my monitor and see if they were listening or chatting

readerdiane: I didn't see it in Mass but met up with it in Maryland for sure

Wesley: Renee was a digital witness

Claire Hertz: the chatting will allow teachers to hear from voices that they may not hear from otherwise

Super Teacher: Great point!

darek: certainly.... the shy girl in the back...

Claire Hertz: when I was in school - too shy to speak out loud - I think I would have typed my thoughts because I had time to think them through before sending them

readerdiane: first person point of view

readerdiane: primary resources

Claire Hertz: digital witness - my kids will hear the stories

Super Teacher: My husband just got back from Iraq 3 years ago, he served 2 terms

dgrice: Getting stories from family, grandparents, etc. Get digital personal accounts before it's too late.

darek: what about the oral tradition? I'd rather have my kid sit in front of me and let me tell them a story then have them watch it on a computer...

readerdiane: But you can record so that you have it later

Claire Hertz: the digital doesn't ever replace the live

Claire Hertz: need both

dgrice: http://storychasers.org

Claire Hertz: Archive the history - locally

Claire Hertz: http://handouts.wesfryer.com/cellphones Handouts for this session

Super Teacher: I don't think you can be completely digital. There HAS to be actual conversation too (esp. for the girls in class :-)

Lori: inteviewing school board members - story chase what is happening in our communities

readerdiane: You have the conversations around & about the story

dgrice: http://lc.celebrateoklahoma.us/video

darek: if you use Firefox, you can install adblockers

Claire Hertz: Can register a Ning Site with it's own URL so it is not blocked in school districts

Claire Hertz: Wow...I wish I had thought of that - so simple - and resolves a HUGE problem

badiettrich from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 5 minutes ago

badiettrich: I'm back

Claire Hertz: wb badiettrich

Lori: Super Teacher tell your husband thank you!

Super Teacher: What site are these videos on?

readerdiane: 2 sites-Oklahoma voices & Wes's wiki

darek: http://lc.celebrateoklahoma.us/video

Super Teacher: I will. Thank YOU for appreciating his service! A lot of people don't and it is sad.

Claire Hertz: Amazing photos of duststorms - dwarfing the houses

readerdiane: The visuals tell so much more than the history books-voices tell emotions also.

Wesley: Technical responses to the video "The Dirty Thirties" by Jeanette Hale

Wesley: http://lc.celebrateoklahoma.us/video/the-dirty-thirties

darek: this would go well with the Grapes of Wrath

Wesley: @Super Teacher I agree totally about the need for F2F conversations. There are SO many discussions that we can and should have about the issues which this raises, and many of those are NOT technical

Wesley: might need more movement

Lori from x.x.x.131 joined the chat

Wesley: could integrate more music and lyrics

Wesley: zooms might be distracted

darek: yaya it's working now!

badiettrich: nice transitions

Claire Hertz from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 2 seconds ago

Claire Hertz: yeah - it's back!

darek: I bet the wireless at the Hilton is better :)

Super Teacher: My kids would LOVE this!

Lori: hmmm I don't think anywhere would be better

Claire Hertz: lol...darek - this just allows us to show our backup plans

Super Teacher: Yes it is better next door...

dgrice from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 2 seconds ago

readerdiane: What are we trying to communicate?

Super Teacher: Creativity with technology?

darek: the thing that I have trouble with is that many of my students don't have computers or internet at home. Some of my kids don't have electricity or plumbing. I work in the middle of the woods.

Wesley: student engagement has a lot to do with background knowledge they have

Wesley: @derek do your kids have cell phone connectivity?

Super Teacher: I would (most likely) just use this at school and have my class work on it there. Even if there is only a few kiddos without tech at home it creates an uneven plain.

Lori from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 3 seconds ago

Claire Hertz: media saturated society - students come with media experiences - how do we make them more media saavy?

darek: some of them do....

readerdiane from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 5 seconds ago

badiettrich: welcome

Lori: Derek I do too - but you would be suprised at what they know and can do - a lot of my students hang out in the public library on the computers

Claire Hertz: the phots were needed to show how massive the duststorms were compared to the smallness of the houses

readerdiane: my students love the music-it's very important.

readerdiane: primary sources are so important

Lori: the best way to learn history is from those who lived history - primary sources

Claire Hertz: document the primary sources - i remember a paper I did in high school where I interviewed a grandmother in the community that remembered the local gold rush

darek: for the classroom, pandora.com is the greatest place to get free music to play in the classroom. Students can tell you a band name, you type it in and it plays music for free. It is not censored though so be warned about that.

Claire Hertz: the story was much more interesting hearing directly from someone that experienced the changes that happened in the small town that was inundated with gold miners

Super Teacher: I use pandora in my room and love it!

Pia Alliende: in some district pandora is filtered :-(

dgrice from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 10 seconds ago

badiettrich: Photo Story does the pictures, motions and creates the music and it's free from Microsoft.

readerdiane: it sucks up bandwidth though

badiettrich: I have not had a problem with bandwidth and Photo Story.

readerdiane: pandora takes bandwidth

darek: everything does.

dgrice: wont' be long before kids are coming to school with their own handheld (cellphone) devices with web, video, multimedia capabilities - that completely bypass the schools' internet filter and firewall.

Claire Hertz: storytelling makes it interesting

joe from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 11 seconds ago

Claire Hertz: think of how many stories Sir Ken used in our keynote yesterday

darek: I want a "Sir" in front of my name dangit!

darek: I bet my students would pay attention!

Claire Hertz: darek - i think it's something you're going to have to earn

Super Teacher: I think he looks like Letterman :-)

Lori: Yes Sir Darek you can have it!

badiettrich: I want a "sir " in front of my name too......

darek: sweet!

Wesley: Ways to get a picture off your phone?

Claire Hertz: using a cord to attach to your laptop

Claire Hertz: paying a fee through your cell phone service

readerdiane: direct connection to laptop with cord

sir darek from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 6 seconds ago

sir darek: WEEE!! that's fun

Wesley: use a cable to connect your phone to the computer

Claire Hertz: ask the kids to upload the photo to the computer

sir darek: sometimes all the phones want you to install their own goofy software

Super Teacher: Sir Darek, good thing you are already at a "round" table!

Claire Hertz: more navigational intheir learning style

Lori: Welcome Sir Darek to us lowly ones

sir darek: @ST BOOOOOO!

Wesley: take out the SD card

dgrice: send MMS message w/picture attachment to your e-mail account

sir darek: beats my ratnest of chords in my bottom drawer!

Claire Hertz: carry an adaptor kit

readerdiane: cables to go

Wesley: Bluetooth images

sir darek: I notice that Chatzy does NOT have spellcheck :(

Claire Hertz: mac - utilities - bluetooth file exchange - run the program - make it discoverable - within 30 feet

Wesley: upload directly to Flickr via email

Claire Hertz: make the photos private until you approve them

Super Teacher: Woa! How did he zoom?

Claire Hertz: change privacy settings on flickr

Claire Hertz: setup separate flickr account that is private and then you can post to the live account to the world

sir darek: is Flickr free?

Claire Hertz: this is called the turn in account for students

Claire Hertz: yes it's free

dgrice: OPTION-APPLE to zoom in. OPTION-APPLE - (minus) to zoom out.

dgrice: Plus ( ) to zoom in.

Super Teacher: Is Flikr free for the kids when they send theri pics? Is there still a charge from the cell company?

Super Teacher: Oh, I only have a lowly Dell...

Claire Hertz: put flickr address in address book and send photo directly to flickr

sir darek: I'm sure they have to have data packages with their cellphones

sir darek: some charge by the kb

sir darek: or you can get unlimited data packages but they cost a bunch

Claire Hertz: use your students as resources - they will be quicker on uploading a picture than it takes for you to figure it out

sir darek: it's Mt. Hood!

Wesley: what does publishing in a Web 2.0 world mean?

readerdiane: can be accessed from anywhere

Claire Hertz: Voicethread - use to publish in a Web 2.0 world

Claire Hertz: anytime, anywhere, two way interaction on the web

sir darek: I miss the interent when it was just grey backgrounds and text :(

Claire Hertz: Voicethread gives a free account to educators

bob from x.x.x.131 joined the chat

bob from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 5 seconds ago

Claire Hertz: Moderation issue - Voicthread can be private and shared specifically with students and parents

readerdiane: Education account

readerdiane: Education account

Claire Hertz: Digital storytelling ties to the writing process - students write out their scripts to be posted on their project

sir darek: I need a haircut!

readerdiane: the key is storyboarding ahead of time

Lori from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 11 minutes ago

Claire Hertz: 3 steps to making a voicethread - upload photos, make comments, share it

Claire Hertz: Can put a link right inside the picture on Voicethread

Claire Hertz: hyperlinked writing is the most powerful form of writing

dgrice: "Hyperlinked writing is the most powerful form of writing."

Claire Hertz: empowers the reader to go deeper and learn more as they read

Lori: talk to students about hyperlinking the responsibility they have to link to it

dgrice: "with great power comes great responsibility"

sir darek: thank you Spiderman's uncle!

Claire Hertz: can upload voice recorded by cell phone

Super Teacher: Sorry, don't get it...?

Claire Hertz: Voicethread calls the person on their cell phone, the person will answer, and then it is like leaving a voice mail "comment"

sir darek: the website will call you and anything you say will be posted as a coment.

sir darek: pretty trippy!

Claire Hertz: then it is sent directly to Voicethread page tied directly to the photo

dgrice: Uploading comment to voicethread via cell phone

Claire Hertz: gives students time to reflect with thought before posting - can post from home later in the evening

Lori: gab cast channel

Claire Hertz: gabcast.com

Claire Hertz: can get 100 mb free gabcast channel

Claire Hertz: Channel password 1234

Claire Hertz: New channel created

Claire Hertz: ITSC 2009

Wesley: To record call 1.888.887.3127

Wesley: channel is 27785 - password 1234

sir darek: What? Standards are your GOD!

Claire Hertz: Respond to the posting from Jennifer - how can we be creative in our schools

John from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 11 seconds ago

sir darek: that voice stream thing is pretty rock and roll!

sir darek from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 4 minutes ago

sir darek: I think I could use the voice stream thing as a part of my reader responce journal stuff. Instead of writing down their thoughts on paper after they read a chapter, they could call and record their comments.

sir darek: I think that would be BA

Wesley: Our Gabcast channel for ITSC 2009: http://www.gabcast.com/index.php?a=episodes&id=27785

sir darek: Does Voicethread have the same capabilities to call in and record responses or do they need to do it with a computer?

sir darek: I think Voicethread is much prettiet than gabcast but like that gabcast eliminates the need to have a computer

Lori: Yes Sir I think so

readerdiane: Voicethread allows 3 minutes & then you pay

sir darek: ahhh....

bob: good to know

sir darek: I'll give up pretty for free!

Wesley: Lynell Burmark says the brain processes an image 60,000 times faster than text

Wesley: Questions at this point?

readerdiane: How do we get the audio to the Voice Thread?

Wesley: how do you incorporate these tools into your classroom?

Wesley: pricing for this?

Wesley: how do we get our Gabcast into voicethread?

Claire Hertz from x.x.x.131 joined the chat 3 seconds ago

Claire Hertz: Ask three than ask me - students seeing themselves as resources before going to the teacher for help

sir darek: wait... where's that handout link he just showed

Super Teacher: Which program would you recommend that a classroom teacher purchase? Phone recordings are limited. So, is that for the lifetime of your account or for the month...etc.?

JennG: http://handouts.wesfryer.com/cellphones

Claire Hertz: can use a land line - does not have to be a cell phone

sir darek: thanks :)

JennG: No purchase necessary. Use the free versions!

Claire Hertz: Can download gabcast recording when playing as an mp3 file

Claire Hertz: download file - right click - control click on mac - save link as - create a new audio folder - and save

bob: i was able to upload to my msn... cool

readerdiane: I have ordered the book already this morning.

sir darek: SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW CONNECTION

sir darek: still waiting for the confirmation email? Anyone recieved theirs yet?

Lori: I have mine

Claire Hertz: Grandmother's are comfortable using the telephone - great way to get them involved - especially when a student is there to hand them the phone

Wesley: http://www.howeschools.org

Wesley: http://www.howeschools.org

Lori: Feel free to call mine use channel 27789 - Password 1234 and tell me about your favorite vacation

readerdiane: I had to use my gmail-school must have it blocked

Claire Hertz: Students don't have to use their names - don't have to be published - ok to simply hear their voice

Claire Hertz: yabbit teachers - yeah, but we can't...find ways to do it instead of reasons you can't do it

Claire Hertz: if cell phones aren't allowed at school have them call in from home as homework

readerdiane: It is getting slower & slower-like mud

Claire Hertz: Gabcast can be used to record a conference call from schools in two differenct countries

Claire Hertz: Don't talk about the tool, talk about what you can do now that you couldn't do before

Claire Hertz: c

Wesley: Darren Kuropatwa's blog: http://adifference.blogspot.com/

Claire Hertz: Could use Gabcast as an interview tool - call in together as a conference call - and record and post

Claire Hertz: Students get to learn about time zones - China - never in school at the same time of day - instead do a delayed audio conference using Voicethread

Claire Hertz: http://ed.voicethread.com

Claire Hertz: Voicethread has accountability - You Tube does not - teachers have accounts and students have child accounts - have accountability to the teachers

Claire Hertz: Costs a fee

Wesley: http://www.speedofcreativity.org/2009/02/14/howe-oklahoma-students-lead-virtual-field-trip-at-fort-smith-arkansas/

Claire Hertz: Can also get an educator account for free - two separate resources

Claire Hertz: KC3 Project - Beyond the Virtual Fieldtrip and the Collaborative Project

Claire Hertz: ponsored by Trandberg and CILC Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration

Claire Hertz: 2008 KC3 Project is on TeacherTube http://www.teachertube.com

Claire Hertz: http://k12onlineconference.org

Wesley: http://k12onlineconference.org/?p=279

Super Teacher: When you click "Call Details" on gabcast it shows caller ID. Is this information available to all viewers of just the creator of the account? Also, how do you delete recordings once they are posted?

sir darek: channel number: 27800 channel password: 1212

sir darek: that's my test gabcasty thingy

sir darek: We should also investigate the power of dancing in the classroom!

readerdiane: Create the structure and get out of their way-I like it, but I am a planner too.

sir darek: well you can plan it, but also you should be flexible to let things move in directions that you didn't plan. I see a lot of teachers who try to control and direct everything. Sometimes the best learning opportunities pop up and you can't ignore them to make sure you stay on the plan.

readerdiane: Project based allows the students choices but it usually is within a framework.

Claire Hertz: ok...what kind of dancing do you do Sir Darek?

Claire Hertz: I'm partial to waltz and west coast swing

sir darek: I like a little krumping

Super Teacher: How can you search for someone elses chanel on gabcast? I tried putting in the chanel# and it won't come up.

sir darek: I think maybe if there isn't any content in the channel yet it won't show? I honestly don't know. My channel is shown in the Mychannel tab, but when I search for it it says no results

Claire Hertz: Homework today - return to our voicethread - reflect on third slide - with text, audio or gabcast and Wesley will upload

sir darek: I'll call it and see if once it has content it is searchable...
